Recycle Your Boots!

Tecnica and Südtirol Gardenissima, via the Recycle Your Boots programme, give used ski boots a second lease of life.

Introduced during the last winter season, the Recycle Your Boots programme is a circular economy scheme by Tecnica, ski boots brand and leader in terms of performance and now also sustainability.

Plastic waste is a huge problem for planet Earth. The world's largest build-up of plastic waste is literally the size of a seventh continent. In the best case scenario, when an old pair of ski boots reach the end of their life cycle they end up in a landfill or are burnt in an incinerator. Last winter, Tecnica, a world leader in ski boots, launched Recycle Your Boots, a circular economy project supported by the European Commission’s Life programme, aiming to contribute to protecting the planet by converting old, used boots into second-generation material, with a saving in energy resources and a reduction in CO2 emissions.

“The goal of Tecnica is to allow skiing enthusiasts to enjoy every single moment on the slopes,” explained Marco Aliprandi, Italy marketing manager for the Blizzard and Tecnica brands. “If we want this to still be possible in the future, we must all play an active part to combat the climate crisis. We normally accept a pair of old boots of any brand against purchase of Tecnica boots, through which we can cover the costs of disposal. As gold sponsor of Südtirol Gardenissima, alongside the organisers we set out to offer both spectators and athletes the possibility of bringing in their old boots in order to give them a second lease of life.”

Boots collected during Südtirol Gardenissima will be converted into plastic granules and aluminium pieces ready to be melted down and reused in industrial production. Part of the plastic and metals is to be used to make Tecnica boots and Blizzard skis for the coming seasons, while the non-separable parts of the boots are to be converted into the padding for Liski protection mats.

The Recycle Your Boot station will be active for all participants of the Südtirol Gardenissima on Friday, March 31, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. during the distribution of bibs and race packs at the Culture Center in Selva Val Gardena.
